The interplay of color occurs via harmony and contrast; while the opposition of colors in contrast creates a strong vibration, the softness of harmony causes close color values to blend and interpenetrate. Working with ‘soft’ color harmony, I have moved one step beyond the reduction of form via primary shapes, into dematerialization of form.
This dematerialization is enhanced by framing; white edging and box framing are employed to frame the work as minimally as possible, leaving only color and shadow, resulting in colorworks that appear to float on the wall, creating a soft ‘yin’ color experience, which gently opposes the ‘yang’ of strong color contrasts in my other work. Despite this soft impression, the colors within still contain the magical effects of color interaction, just on a more quiet level.
